where angels

assignment for 9/24:

1.
original image, resized for web:

2.
Global color corrections and cleanup with layers and all that. I neutralized the color cast using the technique Deirdre showed us in class yesterday, and fiddled with the hue and contrast a bit in order to make the image more vivid and less blown-out:

3.
I wanted to draw out the grid-like, 2-D, "institutional" nature of the building and the atmosphere. So I actually used the rubber stamp tool to black out a few windows in order to make a more 2-D, oppressive feeling. I also heightened color/contrast levels to make it more "posterized." I wanted to deal with the blown-out nature of the photo without having to change the crop -- particularly the white foreground that is the bottom 1/4 or so of the frame. So the idea with blacking out the windows and smoothing the white out was to emphasize the starkness and contrast of the image and hopefully to turn that aspect of the photo into an asset.
